Periodontitis is a serious complication of diabetes. However, the interactions between the two systemic diseases are often underestimated. Diabetics not only have an up to 4.8 times increased risk of periodontitis, with them the periodontal disease also progresses faster and is more pronounced. Conversely, periodontitis itself is a risk factor for diabetics. As a chronic systemic inflammation, it has a negative effect on diabetes, as it increases the insulin resistance of the tissues and thus the blood sugar levels.
